Quick Tips for Type 1 Diabetes

What follows is a quick and dirty list of my top of mind quick tips.

  1. Children with diabetes are more likely to miss days at school than non-diabetics.

  2. Glucagon should only be given if someone with hypoglycemia is unable to take food by mouth.

  3. People with significant diabetic retinopathy can have 20/20 vision. Get regular eye exams.

  4. Levemir and Novolog can be mixed together in the same syringe, but the Novolog works slower.

  5. Injecting insulin at room temperature is less uncomfortable than injecting cold insulin.

  6. One starch or bread exchange is equal to 15 grams of carbohydrate and 3 grams of protein.

  7. One milk exchange equals 12 grams of carbohydrate and 8 grams of protein

  8. A gram of fat has 9 calories.

  9. A gram of protein has 4 calories

  10. A gram of carbohydrate has 4 calories
